Canada Cup 2017

Sunday the 12th Of February saw the 65th running of the Canada Cup. An amazing turnout of 67 divers signed on with an impressive turnout of 21 boats . After a quick briefing the divers hit the water and the boats slowly made their way out of the Haven ready for the start. The flag dropped and the boats were off racing. Almost all of the boats headed north to dive the 2 and 3 mile reefs with some venturing as far as Norah Head and the Bull. The weather gods were really in our favor today with almost glass out conditions for most of the day. The divers had plenty of time as the weigh in was not until 2:30 PM that afternoon. Was great to see every category filled including an amazing 13 juniors, 3 ladies and 3 sub Juniors. The predicted forecast for the day was for temperatures to reach upwards of 35 degrees with a late southerly change late in the afternoon. The water was warm around 23 degrees in most places and visibility ranged from a few meters to over 15 on the wider reefs. The pelagics that usually patrol the outer reefs were not in any numbers this year. Bonito that are usually plentiful were very scarce as were the kingfish although there did appear to be plenty of tasty reef fish around in large numbers.

It’s always a long day when you dive for over 6 hours. Most divers using the most of their time working their way back towards Terrigal and diving some of the close in reefs around the Skillion before the 2:30 sign off.

Hayden Montgomery – 6.17 kg Dusky Flathead

Hayden Montgomery took out the most meritorious fish with a huge 6.17 kg flathead. Josh Green took out largest Black Drummer with a nice 4.4kg fish and also took out largest Red Morwong with a huge 2.3kg monster. Derick Cruz took out the largest fish overall with a nice 12 kg kingfish.

Going to show what a great diver he really is as I believe he spent most of his time helping his son Max, Aaron Carey took out the comp for another year. He also took out the largest bream with a 1.3kg beast and also pocketed $200 cash for the effort. Was great to see so many Newcastle Neptunes making the trip down south to support the competition.

Next year we are planning an even better and better competition so please put aside this date of Sunday the 11th of February in your calendar and we hope to see you next year.
