Darwin Dolphins
GENERAL INFO ABOUT CLUB
When I talk to visiting divers that are coming up to Darwin I tell them to learn braille before they get here.
Fair visibility is about 3 meters anything more is a bonus although I’ve speared Jewies just over a meter vis. Our tides range from minus zero and up to 8 meters these are called spring tides and every 8 to 10 days we have neap tides with 1 to 3 meter movement and last up to 6 days.
We are blessed with the abundance of wrecks, several WWII wrecks in the harbour and they are around 20m deep, Cyclone Tracy wrecks (Christmas 1974) and wrecks and things that Fisheries have sunk for us, maybe up to 100 all told. The ones around Lee Point and off Nightcliff are in 10 to 17m and a 45 minute steam out of the Harbour to the Fenton Patches, these wrecks are pushing 30 meters. Of course there is countless reefs dotted in and around Darwin, The Tiwi islands, Dundee etc. I don’t care for the snapping hand bags so I don’t go up river mouths and push the envelope.
Luckily I think Darwin is the Black Jewfish Capital of Australia and usually spear one or two every neap. See you up here and don’t hesitate to call me 😊
